Cohu acquires Delta Design, supplier of test handling solutions.

Delta’s Summit series of pick-and-place thermal handlers are designed to meet the requirements of manufacturers of microprocessors, graphic processors and other high speed, high power integrated circuits. The Summit handlers incorporate Delta’s proprietary thermal control technology. The Summit PTC, or Passive Thermal Control, and ATC, or Active Thermal Control, models dissipate the heat generated during test enabling the integrated circuit to be tested successfully at its maximum speed and performance.

One of Delta Design’s original offerings, the Delta 40xx series handler is specifically designed to run carrier mounted devices from 3/4" up to 4". These original Delta Design handlers are very well suited for either production lots of carrier mounted devices or engineering lots for custom packages that can be mounted in a carrier. Both handlers also feature 30 minute change over time, vertically mounted contactors, and plunge style contactors that can be retrofitted for plunge to board applications. Single site, Tri-temperature (-60°C to +160° ± 1°C), Carrier mounted devices 3" up to 4" (PGA, QFP, Flat Pack, LCC, PLCC, Hybrid + Custom), UPH ~750, Single sleeve input, 5 sleeve output featuring closed loop positive binning.

Delta’s VTS300, is an automated burn-in system that is capable of processing numerous low power circuits simultaneously. The VTS300 supports asynchronous loading and unloading of devices without system interruption to transform the burn-in process from a traditional batch-oriented process to a more efficient continuous-flow process.

Monitoring of temperature excursions between two present limits is provided by the Temperature Monitor. If limits are exceeded, power to the monitored unit is removed, a warning lamp is illuminated and an audible alarm is activated. When temperature is again within limits, the monitor may be reset for continued operation. A combination pyrometer scale provides reading at a glance with both Fahrenheit and Centigrade ranges.

Delta 1888 handler for RF/Wireless handling applications. The 1888 is a gravity-feed handler designed specifically for handling RF/Wireless ICs. High frequency devices require special handling to ensure the maximum yield is obtained from the test cell. The 1888 has been designed to create the optimum RF testing environment.

The Delta Design Burn-In System utilizes a versatile circuit board approach which allows the mounting of any combination of device sockets. An internal load rack design accommodates a density of greater than one device per cubic inch of chamber space (for 14-pin DIP devices), mounted in a useable space of 7” x 10” per board. The environmental chamber provides flexible rear wall seals which allow the circuit board connectors of the device under test to be outside the high temperature environment.

Delta’s Castle handlers incorporate a patented vertical tray handling system that provides high input/output automation in an extremely small footprint. The system is available in both memory and logic configurations. Castle Mx32 provides parallel testing of up to thirty-two devices. Castle Lx offers the same small footprint as the Mx32. Castle EC is interface compatible with the existing Castle Lx system and permits the addition of external process modules, such as input loading, extended sort categories, laser mark, etc.

Delta’s Orion system is a test-on-strip handler. In pick-and-place and gravity-feed handlers, ICs are processed in single packages, after they are excised from leadframes or laminate substrates. In test-on-strip, ICs are tested on the leadframe or substrate and are separated in a subsequent operation. Test-on-strip may provide advantages in some applications, such as when testing very small ICs and when testing multiple ICs simultaneously (parallel testing).

The Delta MATRiX is a high performance pick-and-place handler that provides increased productivity in several dimensions of performance: up to three times higher throughput, four times higher parallelism, and active thermal control per test site. With an adjustable test site configuration, customers can reuse existing load-boards, including boards made for gravity handlers. The system also provides flexibility with field upgradeable options including a chamberless tri-temperature test site and auto contactor cleaning.

This is a highly configurable platform capable of handling general purpose integrated circuits to advanced computing and mobile processors that require Cohu’s T-Core active thermal control during test.

The Model 2040, or RFS, is a fast-index time, pick-and-place handler, designed for high volume production applications. This handler’s large thermal storage capacity enables an uninterrupted flow of thermally conditioned devices to the test site. The RFS utilizes a patented contactor indexing mechanism to achieve an index time of approximately 500 milliseconds.
